Rules

Rule 1 - No chat abuse

Don't misuse the chat, and don't choose an unsuitable character name. Hopefully this is common sense, but just in case here is a non-exhaustive list:

• Nothing offensive or toxic or threatening.
• Nothing inflammatory or baiting (messages likely to make other players angry or upset).
• Nothing illegal, and no discussing things which are illegal.
• Nothing harmful to children.
• No personal information.
• No advertising or spamming.
• No swearing.
• No scamming (deceiving other players for your own gain, or to maliciously harm them).
• No encouraging others to break the rules or the law.

Nothing illegal includes:
• No hate speech.
• No harassment, stalking, threats or abuse.
• No dealing of drugs or psychoactive substances.
• No dealing of real world firearms, ammunition, knives or other weapons or imitation weapons.
• No dealing of criminal property.
• No encouraging animal cruelty.
• No encouraging terrorism.
• No sexual exploitation or abuse.
• No grooming.
• No controlling or coercive behavior.
• No intimate image abuse.
• No encouraging human trafficking.
• No encouraging unlawful immigration.
• No fraud or financial services offenses.
• No encouraging suicide or self harm.
• No foreign interference.
• No infringing 3rd party rights.

Nothing harmful to children includes:
• Nothing adult only.
• No pornographic content.
• No bullying.
• No gambling.
• No encouraging violence.
• No depicting real or realistic, serious violence or serious injury.
• No encouraging the taking/use of harmful substances.
• No encouraging dangerous stunts or challenges.
• No shaming or stigmatizing body types or physical features.
• No encouraging depression, hopelessness or despair.
• No encouraging eating disorders

No personal information includes:
• No sharing of personal information or passwords.
• No asking others for personal information or passwords.

No advertising or spamming includes:
• No advertising (except you CAN advertise in-game trades, i.e. trading in-game items/currency for other in-game items).
• No spamming (posting nonsense, or the same thing over and over again).
• No automated chat.

Definitions:
• 'including' and 'includes' means: including, but not limited to.
• 'encouraging' means: encouraging, promoting, providing instructions for, inciting, assisting, conspiring, aiding or abetting.
• 'dealing' means: dealing, purchasing, selling, acquiring, giving, borrowing, hiring, lending, marketing, transferring, supplying, manufacturing, using, possessing or concealing (or encouraging of any of those).

Rule 2 - No cheating

• No deliberate bug abuse.
• No macroing (using 3rd party software/hardware to control/play the game automatically).
• No using a gaming mouse to play recorded mouse clicks (as this is a kind of macro).
• No real world trading (trading in-game items/currency for gain outside of Brighter Shores).
• No using or creating 3rd-party Brighter Shores clients.
• No using or creating a modified version of the Brighter Shores client.
• No using or creating 3rd-party Brighter Shores servers.
• No account sharing (more than one person using the same account, including lending the account to someone else to level up for you).
• No multiboxing - i.e. A single person must not login multiple accounts simultaneously. Note: You can HAVE multiple accounts, you just must not log them in at the same time.
• No using or creating software which reads the display or memory or network traffic of the Brighter Shores client."

Rule 3 - No billing abuse

• No fraud.
• No trying to reverse payments, except as described at https://www.brightershores.com/refunds.html
• No account sharing (more than one person using the same account).

Rule 4 - No hacking

• No unauthorized access of our servers or networks.
• No reverse engineering or modifying our software.
• No attacking our servers or networks (denial of service, etc...).
• No trying to access other peoples' accounts.
• No intercepting, modifying or impeding the communications between our client and our servers.
• No other disruption or interference with our service.

Penalties & Appeals

If you break the rules then the penalty will depend on the nature and severity of the offense, but can include any combination of:

• Receiving a warning (minor offenses only).
• Your account or characters being suspended or permanently disabled.
• Privacy settings being locked at maximum (restricting interactions with other players).
• Chat being suspended or permanently disabled.
• Segregation from other players.
• A daily playtime limit being imposed.
• Access to the free version of the game being removed.
• Disqualification from the leaderboards.
• Trading with other players being disabled.
• Disqualification from the PvP leagues.
• Being required to rename your character.
• Removal of in-game XP or items or currency, etc...
• Real world consequences (police, lawyers, etc...).

If you feel a penalty has been issued in error you may appeal it in-game as follows:

a) Open the settings interface.
b) Click on the 'View Violations' button.
c) Click on the row you wish to appeal.
d) Click on the 'OPEN APPEAL' button, and fill in the form.
